THE TEAM

Stacie Doemland

Head Coach - Owner

I dreamed of having my own gym since I was a kid and opened Sunflower Gymnastics in 2004. I have my Bachelors in Physical Education and Health from ESU. I taught in Augusta and Edwardsville before opening my gym. I was teaching Health at the Middle School in Emporia when I opened Sunflower.

I love teaching gymnastics because I get to do what I love everyday and get to share that experience with young people.

When I am not at the gym I enjoy spending time with my family, camping, hiking, sewing, cooking, gardening, working out and reading.

Whitney Sparks
Coach

I am currently attending EHS and will graduate in 2018. I have been competing with the Sunflower Gymnastics Team since 2010, and have participated in many competitions including five National competitions. When I am not doing gymnastics I am participating in cheerleading, diving, National Honors Society, and many other organizations. When I am not busy, I enjoy spending time reading, watching movies, and playing with my two dogs, Candy and Oakley. After graduating from high school I plan to continue my education by attending college.

David Doemland

Coach - Owner

I started coaching gymnastics in 2004 when we opened Sunflower Gymnastics. I was a photojournalist from 1990 to 2007 in Lawrence, Liberal, Galveston and Emporia.

My love for coaching came quickly as I already had the love for working with kids. My experience with Big Brother/Big Sisters and being an Odyssey of the Mind coach for several years all helped. My wife, head coach Stacie, is my biggest role model.

I love coaching because of the people, not only the young lives that we directly affect but also the parents and getting to watch how proud they are of their child(ren) as they grow in the sport and in self confidence.

In my spare time I love to spend time with family, disc golf, home improvements and camping.

Connor DeJesus

Coach

I am currently attending ESU and I have been working at Sunflower since August of 2013. I have been competing on the Sunflower team since 2007 and have finished as high as 2nd at Nationals in Tumbling. What I love about coaching is working with the kids everyday, it is always great to see them complete a difficult task. I stared doing gymnastics at Sunflower when I was in second grade. The coaches have always been supportive and helpful to me, they never give up on anyone.

My dream is to one day either become a forensic scientist or go into professional gaming. My favorite pass times include playing games with my two brothers, reading, playing sports, and playing video games.

Emily McShane

Coach

I am currently attending ESU majoring in Elementary Education. I started gymnastics in 2005 in Centennial Colorado and competed cheerleading until 2016. I started coaching gymnastics in 2013. Teaching and coaching have always been a passion of mine, there is no feeling like watching something difficult finally click for a student. As a coach, I want to encourage students to grow as gymnasts and as successful people. When not in school or working, I love visiting home and hiking, camping, and generally being outdoors, as well as playing with my puppy Tank.

Hannah Graham

Coach

I am currently attending ESU, majoring in Photography and Graphic Design. I attended Sunflower for several years starting in 2006, I joined the team in 2008. I also took dance and was a cheerleader. In 2015 I cheered at the Citrus Bowl in Florida. I worked for 5 years as a lifeguard and swim instructor in my home town of Waverly. For fun I really love hanging with my sisters and friends. I also like to read and going to thrift and antique shops. I love vintage clothes!

Karalyn Karjala

Coach

I joined the gymnastics team at Sunflower in 2014, but have been taking since I was 4 years old. I will be graduating from Emporia High School in 2020. I am involved in many different activities including  diving, 4H, archery, small bore shotgun, and air rifle. I am also a member of National Honor Society. I have learned at Sunflower that it takes hard work, commitment and patience to learn new skills. I have a passion to help students enjoy gymnastics as much I do. My future goal is to become a Physical Therapist and gymnastics coach/owner.
